Despite Madeira’s volcanic origin, there are fantastic beach hotels in Madeira to suit everyone’s taste and budget.
If you are travelling to Madeira with kids, you will discover that family friendly Madeira beachfront hotels are surprisingly affordable compared to other European hotspots.
Where is the best place to stay in Madeira?
The following brief synopsis will help you choose the best place to stay in Madeira.
Madeira’s capital city is a busy, cosmopolitan destination and home to the island’s airport and cruise ship terminal.
There are loads of things to do in Funchal, many of them free or low cost.
Visit colourful parks, botanical gardens, museums and old churches. Stroll the promenade, take the cable car to Monte and ride back to Funchal on a wicker toboggan.
Enjoy world class restaurants and an outdoor cafe culture on Funchal’s famous black and white mosaic pavements.
Read more about the things to do in Funchal here.
The largest beach in Funchal is Praia Formosa, a long, pebbly, volcanic sand beach on the outskirts of the city centre.
South west Madeira
Calheta and Ponto do Sol are the warmest and sunniest locations on Madeira island.
This semi rural area is quiet with scenic, rolling landscapes filled with banana and grape plantations.
The area offers good road links to other destinations around the island and Funchal is a short 30 minute drive away.
Watch the surfers at Jardim do Mar, tackle a levada hiking trail or stroll Calheta’s promenade and take a boat trip from the marina. For something different, visit Madeira’s last sugar cane processing factory near Calheta seafront.
The large, man made sandy beach in Calheta is one of the best beaches in Madeira.
The north coast of Madeira has cooler temperatures but is also less visited and offers visitors dramatic scenery and fantastic hiking opportunities.
Visit the Cultural Park at Santana, swim in the Porto Moniz natural pools or explore the lava caves at Sao Vincente.
Go for a hike on a levada trail or in the UNESCO World Heritage Laurisilva Forest. Kids will love the Madeira Aquarium and, if you have a head for heights, you can go for a thrilling ride on the Achadas Da Cruz cable car.
The best beach on the north coast is the picturesque black sand Seixal beach.
The east coast offers something for everyone and is a popular base for visiting tourists.
Enjoy the colonial architecture and cobbled streets of 15th Century Santa Cruz or Machico or visit Caniçal for its challenging hiking trails.
This busier coastline has good road links and regular bus routes to Funchal.
Choose between the sandy beach at Machico or the pebbly Praia das Palmeiras in Santa Cruz.

Best beach hotels in Madeira
Disclaimer – I have not stayed at the beach hotels in Madeira listed below. We chose to self cater and hired a villa in Madeira).
I have based my selection of hotels on their value for money for families (facilities, food and location), affordability and proximity to the beach. Plus, I search for reviews from other families which I then cross check on other websites.
I aim to source properties around £100 per night so you will be able to find cheaper or more luxurious properties if you wish to.
As always, please check listings and reviews before booking in order to choose the best beach hotel in Madeira to suit your family.
Quinta Da Penha De Franca – a traditional style beach hotel in Madeira
This charming, family run beachfront hotel in Funchal is a short walk from Cristiano Ronaldo’s CR7 museum on the waterfront. It is in the city itself, not in the tourist hotel district on the outskirts of the city.
The hotel and traditional Quinta are set in beautifully landscaped gardens.
Families can choose to stay in the main hotel or in their own spacious, self contained villa on the property. The villa is separate from the main hotel but you are able to use all the hotel facilities.
There are two seawater pools at Quinta Da Penha De Franca (one of which is heated), an on site restaurant, airport shuttle and free parking. WiFi is available in public areas.
Guests praised the perfect location, staff, plentiful breakfast, cleanliness and old world charm of the property. Some visitors were returning visitors which is always a sign of a good hotel!

Calheta Beach Hotel, Calheta – best beach hotel location
This Madeira hotel cannot be beaten for location as it lies directly on Calheta’s golden sand beach. With its calm sea, golden sand and gentle incline Calheta beach is perfect for families.
Calheta Beach Hotel (also called Savoy Calheta Beach) has excellent family friendly facilities.
The hotel offers free cots and infants beds, a children’s pool, an onsite playground and free children’s club.
It has a fee paying babysitting service and a useful airport shuttle. There are 3 restaurants, 2 cafes, a spa, indoor and outdoor pools and free WiFi.
Calheta Beach Hotel is a Madeira all inclusive hotel so though it is not the cheapest hotel on this list, it is good value for money considering the price includes all your food and drink.
We visited Calheta beach several times during our Madeira family holiday and this hotel looked amazing.
Reviews from families mentioned the friendliness of staff, excellent service and spotless facilities but food reviews were mixed.

Enotel Baia Do Sol, Ponto Do Sol
This highly regarded hotel in nearby Ponto do Sol is excellent value for money as the price includes breakfast. All inclusive options are also available.
The colorful hotel is opposite Ponto do Sol pebbly beach and offers a heated pool with children’s area, an indoor play area and fee paying baby sitting service. An airport shuttle is available and there is also a well equipped gym.
Reviews rave about the spacious rooms, fantastic sun terrace, tasteful decor plus the Ponto Do Sol village setting and beach sunsets. Some reviewers mentioned that the free parking at the hotel can be tricky and tight!

Aqua Natura Bay, Porto Moniz – the best beach hotel in Madeira for families
This hotel is 6 miles from Seixal Beach but only 8 minutes walk from Porto Moniz natural pools. The entrance to the fee paying pools is included in the price of your stay at Aqua Natura Bay.
The hotel sits on the seafront with fantastic views of the north Madeira coastline and the Atlantic Ocean.
Though not strictly a beach hotel, I have included Aqua Natura Bay as I think it is one of the best hotels in Madeira for families.
Firstly, they allow five in one room! Anyone who has three kids (like us) knows how rare this is.
Plus, each child will have a bed. Even rarer!
Secondly, each room comes with catering facilities – a fridge, microwave, hob and cooking equipment. Self catering is a great option to keep costs down on a Madeira family holiday and generally makes travelling with kids easier.
There is an indoor pool, free WiFi, an onsite restaurant plus a gym, fitness classes and spa. The outdoor pool and spacious sun terrace has amazing views.
Guest reviews praise the spacious rooms, comfortable beds, friendly staff and amazing views.

Estalagem do Mar, Sao Vicente
This small, 3 Star seafront hotel is within walking distance of Sao Vicente caves and the Laurisilva Forest.
Estalagem do Mar also allows five in one room using a double bed, sofa bed and freely available children’s beds. Breakfast is included in the price of your stay.
There are two swimming pools, a children’s pool, gym, tennis court and an in house restaurant. Bike rentals are available on site.
Guests praised the spectacular views, proximity to the swimming pool, and plentiful breakfast.
Reviewers mentioned the peaceful location though a couple of reviewers found the hotel and location too quiet?!

Four Views Oasis, Caniço
This large, 224 room Madeira beachfront hotel is a 1 minute walk from Reis Mago Beach and 4 miles from Santa Cruz beach.
It has a huge outdoor seawater pool, heated indoor pool, a children’s pool, playground and fee paying babysitting service. Plus, there are two restaurants, two bars and a gym and spa.
Four Views Oasis is in a quiet location, with a public bus stop right outside the hotel. There is also a useful FREE hotel shuttle bus to Funchal.
A large hotel like this will not suit everyone but I have added it to the list because of its excellent reviews from families.
Reviews mention good food, quiet and convenient location, great views, clean and spacious facilities.
Interestingly, in cross referencing reviews, the price for this hotel varied considerably from site to site. Booking.com had the cheapest price.

Albatroz Beach and Yacht Club, Santa Cruz – the best beach hotel in Madeira?
Ok, so this stunning 5 star hotel near Palmeiras Beach is the most expensive one on the list and is not what I would call a budget hotel.
However, during my searches this hotel came up time and time again as the beach hotel in Madeira with the best reviews. Plus, when I price compared, this hotel worked out around £200 more expensive per week than some of the other hotels on this list.
So, what do you get for that extra £30 a night?
Firstly, you get your own private beach! a huge plus point for a beachfront hotel.
But in my opinion, the standout point of this hotel is that their family rooms are suites so after the kids have gone to bed, the adults can relax in the living room with its own sea facing balcony and tv.
Albatroz Beach and Yacht Club is set in pretty gardens with 3 gorgeous pools, 2 of which are low level seawater pools with incredible ocean views. As one reviewer put it ‘very Instagramable’! The third poos is heated.
Rooms are spacious with extra long beds (my 6 ft 5 husbands dream) and there is an on site restaurant. Furthermore, the hotel provides a complimentary airport shuttle.
Reviews rave about helpful, friendly staff, fantastic room, quiet location and excellent food. ‘Special’ and ‘amazing’ were frequently used.
